The Met Gala and the Garden of Time
Last year’s Met Gala was inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story, “The Garden of Time.” Celebrities showed up in fantastical botanical-themed gowns with a romantic Sleeping Beauty-esque flair. We can’t wait to see what theme the institute will select for 2025 as it determines the flavor, no, the essence, of the entire evening. It also determines the subject of the institute’s annual fashion exhibit, which typically features several hundred items hand-selected from the institute’s unrivaled collection that spans the centuries.
The Met Gala has earned a reputation for prestige due in part to its top-secret, uber-selective guest list. In fact, the Met Costume Institute invites just a few hundred A-list celebrities each year. Last year’s gala was co-hosted by Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, while Ashley Graham, Gwendoline Christie and La La Anthony schmoozed with A-list guests on the red carpet. The gala also welcomes titans from the fashion industry, including stalwarts Tom Ford and Anna Wintour, who have helped to turn the gala into such a celebrated annual tradition.
